Two chickens were lost to raccoons last week: Pilot (the Bardrock) and Ruby (the Rhode Island Red). I won't go into the details because this was gruesome. Death is a blessing we living creatures receive when our bodies are beyond the capacity to sustain life. Raising animals is certainly one way to be reminded.
So sad... sorry to read about your loss. Were they out foraging or did the rascal get into the coop? I worry about this with my girls.
